  • If you’ve been eyeing an e-bike as a way to beat Sydney traffic, now is actually a great time to buy — because for the first time in years, the rules are clear.

NSW has adopted the European EN 15194 safety standard, setting a 250W motor limit and 25 km/h assist cut-off — the same benchmark used across every other Australian state. That means if a bike carries the EN 15194 certification, you can ride it legally in NSW, ride it interstate, and know it has safe mechanical, electrical and battery components.

For commuters, that certification is your shortcut to a smart purchase. All e-bikes sold in NSW must now be independently tested and certified before hitting the bike shop.

What does a legal, certified commuter e-bike look like in practice? Pedal-assist up to 25 km/h, a motor that cuts out when you stop pedalling, and a battery that meets proper safety standards — important if you’re charging at home or in an apartment.

The bottom line: look for the EN 15194 certification, buy from a reputable retailer, and you’ll have a bike that’s legal, safe, and genuinely fit for the daily commute.

  • Traffic is worse, fuel costs more, and cities are finally building the infrastructure to make bicycle commuting accessible to all. A bike gets you there cheaper and with less stress than sitting in a car — and you arrive having actually moved your body. An e-bike helps you get there faster, with less sweat, and gives you the option of carrying more stuff, kids and puppies. Plenty of good reasons to consider for your commute, shop or leisure ride.
